Department of Health

The Department of Health and NHS recommend that breastfed babies from birth to 1 year of age should be given a daily supplement containing 8.5 to 10 micrograms (400iu) of Vitamin D to make sure they get enough, whether or not their mother is taking a Vitamin D supplement. Formula-fed babies should not be given a Vitamin D supplement until they're having less than 500ml (about a pint) of infant formula a day, as infant formula is fortified with vitamin D. Children aged 1 to 4 years old should be given a daily supplement containing 10µg of vitamin D.

Formula-fed or combi-fed babies should not be given a vitamin D supplement until they're having less than 500ml (about a pint) of infant formula a day, as infant formula is fortified with vitamin D. Food supplements should not be used as a substitute for a healthy diet lifestyle. Always tell your doctor in advance if you plan to give your child any supplements.

FAQs

FAQs

Vitamin D aids bone strength, immunity and gut health by regulating the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. In addition, Vitamin D is associated with respiratory health and development. More commonly, we see Vitamin D being present when we talk about tooth strength and growth which is important in the physical early development of children.
Vitamin D is an important vitamin for babies and young children which aids their bone development and strength. Babies are born with an incredible 300 bones making it easier for the infant to go through labour. Within the first year of their life, some of the babies' bones will fuse together to make a total of 206 in a fully formed typical adult. The process of bone fusing is called ossification and requires a healthy intake and supply of Vitamin D.
Children ages 1-4 and all babies are at risk of being Vitamin deficient due to the process of ossification which happens in the first year of growth. A lack of vitamin D could lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children. Bone pain called osteomalacia is more commonly found in adults and is also a result of a vitamin deficiency. The UK Government recommend taking a vitamin D supplement throughout the year.
Having Vitamin D as a liquid makes delivery much easier for parents. Being able to give children drops is the most efficient and easy-to-use solution. There are no known health benefits to having Vitamin D in liquid form.
While both Vitamin D spray and tablets are beneficial, it has been suggested that the concentration of vitamin D in the spray is slightly higher per dosage making it more efficient. Check the packaging for more details. Sprays, tablets and sweets containing vitamin D will suit adults and children at different times during their development.
Health Authorities recommend that all breastfed, healthy-term babies receive a daily vitamin D supplement between 8.5 and 10 µg.
Breast milk alone will not provide an adequate amount of vitamin D to children and infants. It is recommended that children and infants should take vitamin D by the UK government.
Simply drop the vitamin d daily drops into your child’s mouth or add it to their drink in the morning.
Even though both forms of vitamin D are very important to your health, it is easier for the body to absorb vitamin D3. In recent research, being able to sustain vitamin D over the winter months is due to vitamin D3 rather than Vitamin D2.
D2 and D3 have different molecular structures. D2 comes from plants whereas D3 comes from animals. D3 is responsible for maintaining your vitamin D levels in the winter months.
Taking vitamin d spray is a good way of getting a healthy dose of vitamin d into the body with relative ease and simplicity. Although it does not have any major additional health benefits, people use spray due to its efficiency.
It's a fat-soluble vitamin, so it does not dissolve in water and is absorbed best when paired with high-fat foods, so advised to take it with meals.
