Lions Mane and ADHD

Lions Mane and ADHD

Lions Mane (Hericium Erinaceus) is a type of medicinal mushroom that has been found to have  therapeutic effects on conditions like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in children.

Ways in which lions mane can support ADHD:

Cognitive Function:

ADHD is often associated with slower cognitive functions like memory and attention. Lion's Mane has shown potential in improving these cognitive functions.

In a study involving elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment, those who consumed Lion's Mane showed significant improvements in cognitive function. Further research on mice also indicated that Lion’s Mane improved object recognition memory and prevented memory impairments.

Anxiety and Depression Support:

Children with ADHD often experience co-occurring conditions like anxiety and depression. Lion's Mane has been studied for its potential anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) and antidepressant effects.

A small-scale human study found that Lion's Mane consumption led to a reduction in anxiety and depression symptoms in menopausal women.

Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Effects:

Inflammation and oxidative stress are believed to play a role in neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD. Lion's Mane exhibits strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could help mitigate these effects.

Research indicates that Lion’s Mane can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain, potentially contributing to its neuroprotective effects.

Enhanced Dopaminergic Activity:

ADHD is linked to dysregulation of dopamine, a neurotransmitter involved in attention and executive function. Lion's Mane might influence dopaminergic activity, which could be beneficial for children with ADHD.

There is some evidence suggesting that Lion's Mane may enhance dopaminergic activity, which could support attention and behaviour regulation.

Always seek advice from a paediatrician or healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, especially in children.
