Nanny Anita Explains: Baby Tummy Massage

Norland Nanny Anita is a Super Nanny with over 12 years of experience working with children between the ages of 2 months and 17 years.

She explains to us the benefits of tummy massage for babies with colic or trapped wind. For more great tips, follow her on Instagram.

Baby tummy massage is a gentle and effective way to relieve symptoms of colic or trapped wind in infants. Colic is a condition that affects up to 25% of babies and is characterised by prolonged periods of crying, fussiness, and difficulty sleeping. Trapped wind, on the other hand, occurs when gas gets trapped in the digestive system, causing discomfort and pain.

Tummy massage can help to relieve these symptoms by promoting the movement of gas and improving digestion. By gently rubbing the baby's tummy in a clockwise direction, parents can help to break up any gas bubbles and encourage the release of trapped wind. Tummy massage also stimulates the production of digestive enzymes, which can help to break down food more efficiently.

Another benefit of tummy massage is that it can help to relax and soothe the baby. The gentle pressure and warm touch of the massage can have a calming effect on both the baby and the parent. This can be especially beneficial for babies who are experiencing colic and are in a state of distress.

In addition to tummy massage, incorporating a friendly bacteria supplement for babies can be beneficial for colic. Friendly bacteria live in the gut and support the health of the digestive system. For colicky babies, they can help to balance the gut microbiome and reduce symptoms of colic.

Friendly bacteria are generally considered safe for infants, we would always recommend consulting with your healthcare practitioner first.
