5 Tips for Staying Safe in The Sun

Keeping your baba safe in the sun is important to protect their skin from harmful UV rays and prevent immediate and long-term health issues.

We've put together a list of ways you can ensure your little one is protected this summer:

1. Being Prepared

Use apps or websites to monitor the daily UV index and plan outdoor activities accordingly.

2. Using a Broad-Spectrum Suncream

Choosing a suncream with an SPF of at least 30 that offers broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays is important to prevent sunburn.

Suncreams formulated for children are often less irritating for sensitive skin.

Make sure to apply a thick layer to all exposed skin about 15-30 minutes before going outside. Don't forget commonly missed spots like ears, the back of the neck, and tops of feet!

Ensure to reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.

Remember- waterproof suncreams also need reapplication after water exposure.

3. Dressing for Sun Protection

Wearing protective, breathable clothing such as lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and long pants are a great way to prevent sunburn on shoulders, arms and legs. Clothing with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating provides extra protection.

Wearing wide-brimmed hats help to shield the face, ears, and neck. You can also get sunglasses that block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays to protect the eyes.

4. Seeking Shade

The sun's rays are strongest between 12pm and 2pm. Try to keep kids indoors or in the shade during these peak hours.

You can create shade by using umbrellas, canopies, or trees.

5. Staying Hydrated

Kids can get dehydrated quickly in the sun. Offer water frequently and ensure they drink even if they don't feel thirsty.

Sunburn

If your child gets sunburned, move them out of the sun immediately. Use cool compresses, give plenty of fluids, and apply aloe vera, aftersun or a gentle moisturiser to soothe the skin.

For severe sunburns, especially with blistering or fever, consult a healthcare provider.

Baba West x Lyonsleaf Zinc & Calendula Cream is a great option for a gentle cream that can be applied after sunburn. It creates a breathable, protective and moisture repellent barrier to shield your baba from skin damage.
