What are the health benefits of elderberry?

People have used the elderberry for its health benefits for hundreds of years. The reason for this, is that this small dark purple fruit contains an array of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals which can help relieve colds, fight the flu, and support the immune system.

Elderberry fruit also contains high levels of flavonoids, which means it may have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and one cup of elderberries provides around one-third of the recommended daily intake of fibre as well as many vitamins and nutrients that can benefit people’s health:

  • 870 mg of vitamin A
  • 406 mg of potassium
  • 52.2 mg of vitamin C
  • 9 mg of folate
  • 55 mg of calcium
  • 2.32 mg of iron

One study of 60 patients administered 15ml elderberry or placebo syrup during the flu season in 1999-2000, and those using elderberry saw their flu symptoms ease four days earlier than those using the placebo.

While the elderberry is naturally high in Vitamin C, our Baba West Apline Elderberry & Rosehip contains extra Vitamin C, plus Bramble (also known as the humble blackberry!) and Rosehip, both known for their antiviral properties.

We recommend giving your baba one spoon of this delicious syrup daily, doubling over winter or if they are unwell.
